Steam problems usually come down to one of four things: the download pipeline, the local content cache, disk throughput, or something on the machine interfering with the client. These pages work through each in the order that resolves the most cases.

Fixes and compatibility answers are different things
A fix addresses something that is broken and walks through resolving it. A compatibility answer addresses whether two things work together at all, and opens with yes, no, or partly. They are listed separately because the question you arrived with determines which one helps.
Ordering and dates
Within a page, fixes run safest-first: the reversible steps come before the invasive ones. Across this list, pages carry either a verification date, meaning the claims were re-checked against their sources, or an updated date where no re-check has run yet.
