Steam shows one Xbox controller as two, and every input registers twice
Valve fixed this, but not where most people will look. Its Steam Client Beta of 21 September 2026 lists "Fixed showing doubled Xbox style controllers on Windows"; the current stable client still dates from 1 September and does not contain that fix. So if one Xbox-style pad appears twice in Steam and every press lands twice, the problem is the Steam client, not a broken controller or a driver you need to remove. Opt into the client beta to take the fix now, or connect the pad before you launch a game, which avoids the trigger users report most.
Start here
This one is worth getting right because the obvious explanations are all wrong. A controller that registers twice looks like a hardware fault, a duplicate Bluetooth pairing, or a driver conflict, and the advice circulating online sends people to uninstall Windows components over it. Valve's own changelogs place the fault in the Steam client and date the fix precisely.
Symptoms
- Steam's controller settings list one physical pad twice, often as two different Xbox models
- Every button press registers twice - menus jump two entries, dialogs confirm and immediately dismiss
- Stick and flick-stick movement is doubled, so a quarter turn becomes a half turn
- A single controller is picked up as two players in local multiplayer
- The duplication is inconsistent between sessions rather than constant
Why this happens
The Steam client enumerates one Xbox-style pad as two devices
Valve's Steam Client Beta changelog of 21 September 2026 lists "Fixed showing doubled Xbox style controllers on Windows" under Steam Input, alongside an equivalent fix for doubled Steam Controllers on macOS. Valve's wording describes the client showing the controller twice; where a second entry appears, users consistently report that it also delivers input, which is what turns a cosmetic duplicate into doubled presses. The pairing of a Windows fix with a macOS one in the same release points at the client's controller enumeration rather than at anything specific to your PC.

Connecting the pad after the game is already running makes it far more likely
The most useful detail in the community reports is a trigger. A user tracking this in October 2025 described the duplication as inconsistent in general but close to guaranteed when the controller was switched on while a game was already running. That is a testable pattern and it gives you a way to work around the bug without changing any software: have the controller connected and visible to Steam before the game starts.
Not every doubled controller is this bug
The same symptom was reported on Microsoft Q&A in December 2022, years before this client fix, where the resolution was a Steam controller-settings change rather than a client update. Two receivers for one pad - the Xbox Wireless Adapter and Bluetooth both connected at once - and virtual controllers created by remapping software produce the same doubling for entirely different reasons. If the fixes below do not help, the cause is probably one of those.

Fixes
Confirm Steam is listing the pad twice, and check which client you are on
about 3 minSeparates this client bug from a game-side input problem before you change anything.
Applies to: Steam on Windows 10 and Windows 11
- With the controller connected, open Steam and go to Settings, then Controller. Valve documents that every detected controller the configurator supports appears on this screen, so one physical pad should produce exactly one entry.
- If you see two entries for one pad - often listed as two different Xbox models - press a button and watch which entries respond. Both lighting up is the duplication this page is about.
- Now check your client date: Steam menu, then Help, then About Steam. A build dated 1 September 2026 or earlier is the stable release, which does not contain Valve's fix.
- If Steam lists the pad only once and the doubling only happens inside one game, this is not your problem - that is a game-side input setting, not the client.
Confirmed by the vendor.
Connect the controller before you start the game
about 2 minThe duplication is reported as near-guaranteed when the pad is switched on mid-game, and rare when it is already connected.
Applies to: Xbox-style controllers, including third-party pads
- Close the game completely.
- Switch the controller on and wait until Steam shows it - the controller settings screen is the reliable place to check.
- Confirm it appears once, then launch the game.
- If the pad goes to sleep mid-session and you wake it, check the list again before blaming the game.
Reported to work by one user; not confirmed by the vendor.

Check Xbox configuration support in Steam's controller settings
about 5 minAn older, separate cause of the same symptom, resolved by the per-controller-type support toggles Valve documents.
Applies to: Steam on Windows
- In Steam, open Settings, then Controller, and find the per-controller-type configuration support options. Valve documents separate checkboxes for PlayStation, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and generic controllers.
- Note the current state of the Xbox option before you change it, so you can put it back.
- Toggle it and re-test with the game closed and reopened. In the December 2022 Microsoft Q&A thread on this symptom, enabling Xbox controller configuration support was the change reported as working.
- If it makes no difference, set it back to how you found it. This is an older cause and is unlikely to be the 2026 client bug.
Reported to work by one user; not confirmed by the vendor.
Opt into the Steam Client Beta to take Valve's fix now
Check before applyingabout 10 minThe fix exists and is shipped - just not yet in the stable client.
Applies to: Steam on Windows 10 and Windows 11
Before you do this
The client beta is pre-release software: it gets fixes first, and it gets new bugs first. It is reversible through the same setting, but if this machine is one you cannot afford to have a flaky Steam client on, wait for the fix to reach the stable release instead.
- In Steam, open the Steam menu at the top left and choose Settings.
- Find Beta participation and click Change...
- Select "Steam Beta Update" from the drop-down and let Steam restart and update.
- Valve notes you may need to do this twice: if Beta Participation reads "None" after the update, select "Steam Beta Update" again and let it update once more.
- Check Help, then About Steam - you want a build dated 21 September 2026 or later, which is where "Fixed showing doubled Xbox style controllers on Windows" landed.
- To leave later, follow the same path and choose "NONE - Opt out of all beta programs".
Confirmed by the vendor.
Known issues
Valve listed "Fixed showing doubled Xbox style controllers on Windows" under Steam Input in the Steam Client Beta of 21 September 2026. As of 26 September 2026 that fix is beta-only: the newest stable client is still the 1 September release (re-released 6 September), whose sole Steam Input change concerns configurator UI. Stable-channel users therefore have no fix yet, only the workarounds on this page.
Affects Steam stable client 1 September 2026, Steam Client Beta 21 September 2026 and later · Status: workaround only
The symptom is older than this fix. It was reported in Valve's own client-beta forum in October 2025 against a Flydigi Vader 4 Pro, and on Microsoft Q&A in December 2022 against an Xbox Series X controller. That long tail is why so much of the advice online reaches for driver-level explanations for what Valve has now described as a client display fault.

If none of this worked
If Steam lists the pad once but inputs still double, look for a second input path rather than a Steam bug: an Xbox Wireless Adapter and Bluetooth both connected to the same controller, a second receiver still plugged in, or remapping software such as a DS4Windows-style tool presenting a virtual pad alongside the real one. Close the remapper and re-test. Separately: a widely linked thread recommends uninstalling Microsoft GameInput to fix this. That comes from one person's machine, the author says the diagnosis was made with AI assistance and explicitly does not generalise it, and they note Windows may reinstall the component anyway. GameInput is a Windows input component that games use, so removing it is not a first move - try the client-side steps above first.
Common questions
- Is the fix in the normal Steam client yet?
- Not as of 26 September 2026. Valve's newest stable client update is dated 1 September 2026, re-released 6 September, and its only Steam Input change is a configurator UI tweak. The doubled-controller fix appears in the Steam Client Beta of 21 September. It should reach the stable channel in a future client update, at which point opting into the beta stops being necessary.
- Should I uninstall Microsoft GameInput?
- Not as a first step. The recommendation traces back to a single forum report whose author states it fixed their machine, says the diagnosis was AI-assisted, and specifically declines to claim it explains anyone else's case. GameInput is a Windows component that games rely on for controller input, and Microsoft's own Q&A threads note it can reinstall itself. Work through the Steam-side steps first.
- Why does it only happen sometimes?
- Reports describe it as inconsistent, with one consistent trigger: switching the controller on while a game is already running. Connecting the pad first and confirming Steam lists it once before launching avoids it in most reported cases.
- Does this affect third-party controllers too?
- Yes. Valve's changelog says "Xbox style controllers", not Xbox-branded ones, and the October 2025 report was against a Flydigi Vader 4 Pro. Any pad Windows and Steam treat as an Xbox-layout device can show it.
