Shared folders empty in Linux VMs after KB5124008 ("no Plan9 drive shares mounted")

Last verified September 2026Tested against Windows 11 24H2 (broken in 26100.9445, fixed in 26100.9457), Windows 11 25H2 (broken in 26200.9445, fixed in 26200.9457), Windows 11 26H1 (broken in 28000.2954), Windows 11 23H2, Windows 10 22H2, Windows 10 21H2, KB5124008 (September 8, 2026), KB5124012 (September 8, 2026, ARM64 / 26H1), KB5129195 (September 14, 2026, out-of-band — carries the fix), KB5129194 (September 14, 2026, out-of-band, 26H1 — carries the fix)Well documented

Microsoft fixed this on 14 September 2026. Install the out-of-band update — KB5129195 on Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 (builds 26100.9457 and 26200.9457), or KB5129194 on 26H1 — and Plan9 host folder sharing works again. Both are cumulative and carry September's security fixes with them, so you no longer need to remove KB5124008, and you should not. If you applied the Group Policy mitigation, Microsoft says you must re-enable that policy, install the update, and restart.

This one is unusually hard to diagnose because nothing on the Windows side reports an error. The share attach call succeeds, the VM boots, and only the guest notices that the folders never arrived. If you spent an evening rebuilding a VM image that was never the problem, this is why.

Symptoms

  • A Linux VM or development sandbox starts normally, but its shared host folders are empty or missing entirely
  • An application reports "sandbox-helper: no Plan9 drive shares mounted under /mnt/.virtiofs-root/shared"
  • Guest logs show "Plan9 mount failed: invalid argument", or a count such as "mounted 0/9 Plan9 shares" ("mounted 0/1" on ARM64)
  • The Windows host logs no error at all — the share attach call returns success
  • The problem began immediately after installing the September 2026 Windows security update
  • Rebooting, re-adding the shared folders, restarting the VM service and rebuilding the guest from a clean image all change nothing

Why this happens

The September 2026 update changed the host-side Plan9 sharing components

Microsoft's release-health entry attributes the failure to applications that use HCS-managed virtual machines sharing host folders with Linux VMs over Plan9: the VMs start normally, but folders shared from the Windows host do not appear in the guest. Reporters on Microsoft Q&A add that the host call returns success (hr=0x0) while the guest mount point stays empty, and a reporter on GitHub lists the binaries the update replaced — vmcompute.exe, vmwp.exe, computestorage.dll, p9rdr.sys and p9np.dll. That is consistent with a regression on the Windows host rather than in the guest kernel, and it explains why rebuilding the VM or reinstalling the application makes no difference. Microsoft has not published a root-cause statement beyond confirming the issue.

Confirm you are on an affected build · Install the out-of-band update that fixes it · Remove the September 2026 update — only if you cannot install the fix

Only Plan9 sharing is affected, not virtualization generally

Microsoft states that standard Hyper-V virtual machines which do not use the Plan9 feature are not affected. That is the dividing line worth checking before you change anything: if your VM has no host folder shares, or shares them by some other means, this known issue is not your problem.

Fixes

Confirm you are on an affected build

about 3 min

Windows reports no error for this failure, so the build number plus the guest-side message is the only reliable way to tell it apart from an ordinary configuration mistake.

Applies to: Windows 11 23H2, 24H2, 25H2 and 26H1

  1. Press Windows+R, type winver and press Enter. Note the OS build number shown in the second line.
    winver
  2. You are on an affected build if it reads 26100.9445 or 26200.9445 (x64, from KB5124008) or 28000.2954 (ARM64 26H1, from KB5124012). If it reads 26100.9457 or 26200.9457 you already have the fix. Microsoft lists Windows 11 26H1, 25H2, 24H2 and 23H2 and Windows 10 22H2 and 21H2 as affected clients, and no server versions.
  3. Check the guest-side message. This bug reports that no Plan9 drive shares were mounted, a mount failure of "invalid argument", or a zero count such as "mounted 0/9 Plan9 shares". A different error — a permission denial, or a path that does not exist — points somewhere else.
  4. Confirm the timing. If sharing was already failing before 8 September 2026, the update is not your cause.

Install the out-of-band update that fixes it

about 20 min

Microsoft shipped a targeted out-of-band update on 14 September 2026 that restores Plan9 host folder sharing. It is cumulative, so it replaces KB5124008 rather than requiring you to remove it.

Applies to: Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 (KB5129195), Windows 11 26H1 (KB5129194)

  1. Select Start > Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Microsoft states the out-of-band update downloads and installs automatically through Windows Update.
  2. Install KB5129195 on Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, or KB5129194 on 26H1, and restart. You can also download either as a standalone package from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
  3. Confirm the build afterwards with winver. You want 26100.9457 (24H2) or 26200.9457 (25H2). Anything still reading .9445 means the update has not applied.
    winver
  4. If you deployed Microsoft's temporary Group Policy mitigation, re-enable that Group Policy, install the update, and restart. Microsoft added this instruction on 14 September and says the issue is not resolved without it.
  5. Start your VM again and confirm the shares mount. If they still do not, re-check the guest-side error — a different message points at a different problem.

Confirmed by the vendor.

Check how much is actually broken before you remove anything

about 5 min

Microsoft names the Windows Subsystem for Linux as affected, but reporters found ordinary WSL2 file access still working. Knowing which of the two you have can save you from removing a security update you do not need to remove.

Applies to: WSL, Hyper-V-based sandbox VMs

  1. If you use WSL, open a shell in your distribution and list a Windows drive through the usual mount point.
    ls /mnt/c
  2. If that listing works, your everyday WSL drive access is fine. In the Microsoft Q&A thread one contributor reports WSL2 continuing to work with the update installed, and another reproduced the break on a machine with WSL not installed at all — so read Microsoft's "WSL is affected" as applying to Plan9 share attach specifically, not to all WSL file access.
  3. If the application that hosts your own sandbox VM reports no Plan9 shares mounted, that is the confirmed regression and only the workaround below is known to address it.
  4. If your VM does not use Plan9 host folder shares at all, stop here — Microsoft states those VMs are unaffected and your problem is something else.

Remove the September 2026 update — only if you cannot install the fix

Advancedabout 20 min

Now that a fix exists, this is a fallback for machines that cannot take the out-of-band update — a managed device held back by an update policy, for example. It restores the host components the September update replaced.

Applies to: Windows 11 24H2, 25H2 and 26H1

Before you do this

Removing this update takes September 2026's security fixes off your PC and leaves it exposed until you reinstall them. Since 14 September there is a supported fix that does not require this, so treat removal as a last resort for machines that genuinely cannot take the out-of-band update. Microsoft does not recommend removing installed updates and warns you should understand the risks before uninstalling a security update. On a machine you do not fully control, or one subject to a workplace security policy, ask before doing this.

First:

  • Confirm you genuinely cannot install KB5129195 or KB5129194 first
  • Be willing to run without the September 2026 security fixes for as long as the removal lasts
  1. Try the out-of-band update first. It is cumulative, supersedes KB5124008 and keeps September's security fixes in place, which removing the update does not.
  2. Select Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  3. Under More options, select Update history.
  4. Under Related settings, select Uninstall updates.
  5. Select the September 2026 security update for your PC — KB5124008 on x64, KB5124012 on ARM64 26H1 — and select Uninstall. Restart when prompted. Microsoft states some updates cannot be uninstalled; if it is not listed, this route is closed to you.
  6. Start your VM again and confirm the shares mount. Reporters who tested this before the fix shipped found sharing working normally on the next boot with no change to the application itself.
  7. Install KB5129195 or KB5129194 as soon as you are able. That returns both the security fixes and working Plan9 sharing.

Known issues

  • Microsoft moved "Host folder shares might be unavailable in Hyper-V-based Linux VMs" to Resolved on 14 September 2026, three days after opening it. The fix ships in the out-of-band updates released that day: KB5129195 for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, KB5129194 for 26H1. Both are cumulative. Microsoft also added that administrators who deployed its temporary Group Policy mitigation must re-enable that policy, install the update and restart before the issue is resolved for them.

    Affects Windows 11 26H1, Windows 11 25H2, Windows 11 24H2, Windows 11 23H2, Windows 10 22H2, Windows 10 21H2 · Status: fixed

  • Microsoft names WSL as affected, but contributors in the Microsoft Q&A thread report WSL2 file access continuing to work with the update installed, and one reproduced the break with WSL not installed at all. The scope of "WSL is affected" is not settled; on the evidence so far it is Plan9 share attach that breaks, not WSL as a whole.

    Affects Windows 11 24H2, Windows 11 25H2, Windows 11 26H1 · Status: unknown

  • The same September 2026 update carries two other confirmed known issues. Remote Desktop Services instability is resolved by the same out-of-band update. USB Audio Class 1.0 failures are only partly resolved by it — the multichannel and 3D-audio symptom is fixed, while Code 10 and silent devices remain open. If you installed the September update and something else broke at the same time, these are worth checking.

    Affects Windows 11 24H2, Windows 11 25H2, Windows 11 26H1 · Status: open

  • The two GitHub issues that first reported this — anthropics/claude-code #92984 and #92958 — were both still open when re-checked on 30 September 2026, each with only its original reporter, both opened 9 September 2026, and neither carrying any comment confirming that the out-of-band update resolves it. Absence of confirmation there is not evidence the fix failed; nobody has posted either way.

    Affects Windows 11 24H2, Windows 11 25H2, Windows 11 26H1 · Status: fixed

  • Windows 11 version 26H2 reached general availability on 29 September 2026, after the fix shipped. Its release-health page carries no Plan9 host-folder-share entry, so a PC running 26H2 already includes the correction and this page does not apply to it.

If none of this worked

The signature of this bug is that Windows reports the share attached successfully while the guest mounts nothing at all. If your guest reports something else — a permission denial, a path that does not exist, or a share you never configured — you are probably looking at a different problem, and neither installing nor removing an update will help it. Standard Hyper-V VMs that do not use Plan9 host folder sharing are unaffected, and on most machines ordinary file access between Windows and a WSL distribution keeps working. If sharing was already failing before 8 September 2026, start with your application's own configuration instead.

Common questions

Has Microsoft shipped a fix yet?
Yes. On 14 September 2026 Microsoft released out-of-band updates that resolve it — KB5129195 for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, and KB5129194 for 26H1 — and moved the release-health entry to Resolved. Both updates are cumulative, so they include September's security fixes rather than trading them away.
Does this affect Windows 10?
Yes. Microsoft's affected-platforms list now includes Windows 10 versions 22H2 and 21H2 alongside Windows 11 versions 26H1, 25H2, 24H2 and 23H2. That list was Windows 11 only when this page was first written; Microsoft has since widened it. No server versions are listed.
Will reinstalling my VM or the application fix it?
No. Reporters rebooted, re-added their shared folders, restarted the VM service and re-downloaded a clean VM image with no change. That is consistent with the problem sitting in the Windows host components the update replaced rather than in the guest.
Is it still worth uninstalling the security update?
No, not now that a fix exists. Removing KB5124008 takes September's security fixes off the PC, and the out-of-band update restores Plan9 sharing without that tradeoff. Uninstalling is only a fallback for a machine that genuinely cannot take the newer update, and not something to do at all on a machine covered by someone else's security policy.
I installed the update and sharing is still broken. What now?
Check the build number first — 26100.9457 or 26200.9457 means the update actually applied. If you had deployed Microsoft's Group Policy mitigation, re-enable that policy and restart, which Microsoft says is required before the fix takes effect. If the build is right and the guest still reports a different error, you are probably looking at a separate problem rather than this one.
