Teams and New Outlook Won't Open on Windows on Arm After KB5121003
Microsoft fixed this on 8 September 2026. Install the September security update and restart: on Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 that is KB5124008, and on 26H1 it is KB5124012. Both say they address Teams and Outlook unexpectedly closing on Arm64 PCs, and Microsoft marked the known issue Resolved on the release-health pages the same day. The Microsoft Store workaround it published on 1 September is now only needed if you cannot take the September update. Do not uninstall the August security update for this.
This page has been through three versions of the right answer, which is worth knowing if you find contradictory advice elsewhere. In the third week of August the only thing anyone had found that worked was uninstalling KB5121003 - a security update - and that is what most articles still tell you to do. On 1 September Microsoft published a much cheaper workaround: a Microsoft Store package update. On 8 September it shipped an actual fix in the monthly security update, and marked its known issue Resolved. So the ordering below has changed. Install the September update; use the Store workaround only if something is blocking that; and treat pulling an August security update off an Arm laptop as the last resort it always was. One detail that catches people out: the KB number differs by Windows version. On 24H2 and 25H2 the fix is KB5124008. On 26H1 - which ships preinstalled on some new Snapdragon PCs and is never offered through Windows Update - it is KB5124012. If you go looking for KB5124008 in the update history of a 26H1 machine, you will not find it, and nothing is wrong. An honest caveat: these updates shipped on 8 September and this page was re-checked on 9 September, so there has not yet been time for independent confirmation that the fix holds on every affected machine.
Symptoms
- Microsoft Teams opens and then closes again within a second or two
- The new Outlook for Windows does not start at all
- Classic Outlook, Word and Excel start and run normally
- It started after the August 2026 Windows security update was installed
- The PC has a Snapdragon or other Arm processor — Surface Pro 11, Surface Laptop 7, HP OmniBook 3, Dell XPS 13 Snapdragon
- The PC is new, freshly imaged or recently reset and has not installed any Microsoft Store updates yet
- Windows Update has not been run since before 8 September 2026
- Readers who inspected the app package report a status of DependencyIssue for the new Outlook
Why this happens
A Microsoft Store dependency is out of date on freshly imaged Arm PCs
Teams and the new Outlook are packaged (MSIX) apps; classic Outlook, Word and Excel are conventional desktop applications, which is the line the failures fall along. Microsoft says the problem is most likely on new or freshly imaged PCs that have not yet installed any Microsoft Store updates, and its interim workaround was to install the Auto Super Resolution Package at version 1.0.19.0 or later from the Store. Readers on Microsoft's own forums report package-registration errors - 0x80073CFC, GetPackageToken failures, a package status of DependencyIssue. Microsoft never published a root-cause explanation, so treat the Store update as an instruction from the vendor rather than a mechanism anyone outside Microsoft has confirmed. The September 2026 Windows updates now fix the underlying problem.
Install the September 2026 security update · If you cannot update yet: install the Auto Super Resolution Package from the Store
The August 2026 security update is what triggered it
Microsoft names Windows security updates released on or after 11 August 2026 as the originating update - KB5121003 on 24H2 and 25H2, KB5121000 on 26H1 - and readers on both Microsoft Q&A and the Microsoft Community Hub report that removing that update brought Teams back immediately. The same readers note the problem returned as soon as the update was reinstalled, and one reports having seen identical symptoms after an earlier update, KB5094126. That cycle is now broken: the September updates carry the fix, so the apps keep working with the security update installed.

Fixes
Confirm this is the same issue
about 3 minMicrosoft has scoped this narrowly. A wrong diagnosis here ends with you uninstalling a security update you never needed to remove.
Applies to: Windows 11 26H1, 25H2 and 24H2 on Arm64
- Check the processor. Open Settings, then System, then About, and read Device specifications. Microsoft lists this issue for Arm-based devices only — a Snapdragon or other Arm chip. Intel and AMD machines are not on its affected list.
- Check the build. Press Windows+R, type winver and press Enter. On Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 the affected builds are 26100.9168 or 26200.9168, installed as KB5121003. On Windows 11 26H1 — which ships preinstalled on some new Snapdragon PCs and is never offered through Windows Update — the same issue arrives as KB5121000, OS Build 28000.2704. If you went looking for KB5121003 in your update history on a 26H1 machine and could not find it, that is why.
winver - If winver already shows build 26100.9445, 26200.9445 or 28000.2954 or higher, the September update carrying the fix is installed. Teams still failing on those builds is a different problem — see "When something else is wrong" below.
- Check which apps fail. Microsoft's issue covers Microsoft Teams and the new Outlook for Windows. If classic Outlook, Word and Excel start normally, that matches. If everything is failing, or the taskbar and Start search are broken too, you are looking at something wider than this known issue.
Confirmed by the vendor.

Install the September 2026 security update
about 30 minThis is Microsoft's actual fix, not a workaround. Both KB articles state that the update addresses Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Outlook unexpectedly closing on Arm64-based PCs, and Microsoft marked the known issue Resolved on the release-health pages for 24H2, 25H2 and 26H1 on the day they shipped.
Applies to: Windows 11 26H1, 25H2 and 24H2 on Arm64
- Open Settings, then Windows Update, and click Check for updates.
- Install the September 2026 security update. On Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 it is KB5124008, taking the build to 26100.9445 or 26200.9445. On Windows 11 26H1 it is a different update, KB5124012, taking the build to 28000.2954. Windows offers the right one for your version — you do not need to choose.
- Restart when prompted, then confirm the build with winver.
winver - Start Microsoft Teams and the new Outlook. Microsoft states that once you are on an update released 8 September 2026 or later, no workaround is needed.
- If updates are paused or deferred, clear that first in Settings > Windows Update, or the September update will not be offered.
Confirmed by the vendor.
If you cannot update yet: install the Auto Super Resolution Package from the Store
about 15 minThis was Microsoft's interim workaround, published on 1 September 2026, and Microsoft still documents it for anyone on an update released before 8 September. It is second choice now that a real fix exists, but it is useful on a managed or deferred machine that cannot take the September update today.
Applies to: Windows 11 26H1, 25H2 and 24H2 on Arm64
- Open the Microsoft Store.
- Select Downloads, then Check for updates. On a new or freshly reset PC this is often a long list; let it finish rather than stopping at the first few.
- Make sure the Auto Super Resolution Package is among the apps that install, and that it reaches version 1.0.19.0 or later. Microsoft links to it in the Store as an app published by Microsoft.
- Start Teams or the new Outlook again.
- Come back to Windows Update when you can. The September update is the fix; this only works around the problem.
Confirmed by the vendor.
Fall back to classic Outlook while you wait
about 2 minNot a fix, a way to keep working while the September update installs. Microsoft states classic Outlook, Word and other applications are not known to be affected, so mail on the same machine still works.
Applies to: Windows 11 26H1, 25H2 and 24H2 on Arm64
- Open Outlook from the Start menu and check whether it is the classic desktop app rather than the new Outlook — classic Outlook is a separate application and Microsoft does not list it as affected.
- If your organisation has already removed classic Outlook, use Outlook on the web instead until the September update is on the machine.

Uninstall KB5121003 — almost certainly no longer necessary
Advancedabout 20 minThis was the community's answer through late August and it does work, but it is now the wrong move in nearly every case: the September update fixes the problem without giving up any security fixes. It is documented here only for a machine that can neither take the September update nor the Store workaround.
Applies to: Windows 11 26H1, 25H2 and 24H2 on Arm64
Before you do this
KB5121003 is a security update. Removing it leaves the PC without the August 2026 security fixes until it goes back on, and Windows Update will offer it again. Microsoft never endorsed removing the update for this issue, and since 8 September there is a proper fix — so there is now very little reason to do this. Install KB5124008 (or KB5124012 on 26H1) instead.
First:
- Accept that the PC will be without the August 2026 security fixes until the update is reinstalled
- Try the September update and the Store workaround first. Both are above, and both are better than this.
- Open Settings, then Windows Update, then Update history.
- Scroll to the bottom and select Uninstall updates.
- Find the entry for KB5121003 and select Uninstall, then restart.
- Install the September update (KB5124008, or KB5124012 on 26H1) as soon as you are able. That returns the security fixes and keeps the apps working.
Reported to work by 3 users; not confirmed by the vendor. 1 report it did not help.

Known issues
Microsoft opened "Microsoft Teams and Outlook might fail to launch on ARM-based devices" on 1 September 2026 at status Mitigated, and marked it Resolved on 8 September 2026. The fix ships in that month's security update, and the KB number depends on the Windows version: KB5124008 on 24H2 and 25H2, KB5124012 on 26H1. The originating update likewise differed by version — KB5121003 on 24H2 and 25H2, KB5121000 on 26H1.
Affects Windows 11 26H1, Windows 11 25H2, Windows 11 24H2 · Status: fixed
Microsoft still documents the Microsoft Store Auto Super Resolution Package update (version 1.0.19.0 or later) as the workaround for anyone running an update released before 8 September 2026. It states that on an update released 8 September or later no workaround is needed. Microsoft has never published a root cause for why a display-feature package affects Teams and Outlook.
Affects Windows 11 26H1, Windows 11 25H2, Windows 11 24H2 · Status: workaround only
Microsoft documents the fix on both sides: KB5124008 and KB5124012 each state they address Teams and Outlook unexpectedly closing on Arm64 PCs, and the release-health pages mark the issue Resolved. But as of 21 September 2026 neither large community thread carries a first-hand report of the September update fixing an affected machine — the Microsoft Q&A thread's latest reply, on 17 September, asks for exactly that. Install the update on the vendor's word, and be ready to reset Teams.

If none of this worked
If your PC has an Intel or AMD processor, this is not your problem — Microsoft lists the issue for Arm-based devices only, and a Teams that will not start on an x64 machine has different causes. If Word, Excel and classic Outlook are failing too, or the taskbar and Start search are also broken, that is wider than this known issue even if it began after the same update. If winver already shows build 26100.9445, 26200.9445 or 28000.2954 or higher and Teams still will not open, the fix for this bug is on the machine and something else is wrong. The useful next step is to reset the app: Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Microsoft Teams, then Advanced options > Reset. Signing in to a new Windows user profile also separates a per-profile package problem from a machine-wide one. One reader on Microsoft's community forum found KB5121003 already in the factory image of a brand-new Snapdragon Surface, leaving no update to uninstall. On such a machine the September update is the route.
Common questions
- Has Microsoft fixed it yet?
- Yes, as of 8 September 2026. Microsoft marked the known issue Resolved on the release-health pages for Windows 11 24H2, 25H2 and 26H1, and both September KB articles state that the update addresses Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Outlook unexpectedly closing on Arm64-based PCs. Install the September security update and restart. This page was re-checked on 9 September, one day after the fix shipped, so there has not yet been time for independent confirmation across a range of machines.
- Which update do I need — KB5124008 or KB5124012?
- It depends on your Windows version, and Windows Update offers the right one automatically. KB5124008 is for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 and takes the build to 26100.9445 or 26200.9445. KB5124012 is for Windows 11 26H1, the release that ships preinstalled on some new Snapdragon PCs, and takes the build to 28000.2954. Checking winver after the restart is the quickest way to confirm you got it.
- Do I still need the Microsoft Store workaround?
- Only if you cannot install the September update. Microsoft states that on an update released 8 September 2026 or later, no workaround is needed. If a work-managed PC is holding updates back, the Auto Super Resolution Package update (version 1.0.19.0 or later) from the Store is still the documented interim step.
- Should I just uninstall the update, as most articles say?
- No, not any more. That advice was written in late August, before Microsoft published either a workaround or a fix, and it does work — three readers on Microsoft's forums report Teams coming straight back. But it removes the August security fixes, Windows Update re-offers the update, and since 8 September there is a proper fix that costs you nothing. Install the September update instead.
- Does this affect Word, Excel or classic Outlook?
- No. Microsoft states that classic Outlook, Word, Excel and other applications are not known to be affected. Only Microsoft Teams and the new Outlook for Windows are named.
- Why would a display feature package have fixed an email app?
- Microsoft never explained the connection. It said only that the issue is most likely on new or freshly imaged PCs that have not installed any Microsoft Store updates yet, and that installing the Auto Super Resolution Package at version 1.0.19.0 or later worked around it. That was a vendor instruction rather than a mechanism anyone outside Microsoft verified, and it is now superseded by the September update.
- This happened to me before, after a different update. Is that related?
- Possibly. The reader who opened both community threads reports identical symptoms on the same hardware after an earlier update, KB5094126, and that a factory reset cleared it until the next patch went on. Microsoft has not linked the two publicly, so treat that as a reader observation rather than an established pattern.
