Do PC games work on Snapdragon Windows on Arm laptops?
Last verified September 2026Tested against Windows 11, version 24H2 and later on Arm (includes the Prism emulator), Windows 10 on Arm (x86 emulation only, no x64), Snapdragon X series, Snapdragon X2 seriesGood evidence
Partially
Most single-player games run under Prism emulation at reduced settings, but any game whose anti-cheat loads a kernel driver will not start at all unless its publisher has shipped an Arm64 build of that anti-cheat — and as of September 2026 very few have.
What you need
- Windows 11 on Arm. Prism, the current emulator, ships with Windows 11 version 24H2. Windows 10 on Arm emulates 32-bit x86 apps only, so 64-bit games will not run there at all.
- A Snapdragon X series processor for the full emulator feature set. Microsoft states that some performance features within Prism require hardware features only available in the Snapdragon X series.
- For any online game protected by kernel-level anti-cheat, an anti-cheat client the publisher has compiled for Arm64. This is not something you can install, configure or work around at your end.
Supported on
- Windows 11, version 24H2 and later, on Arm
- Snapdragon X series and Snapdragon X2 laptops
- Other Arm64 Windows 11 devices, with some Prism optimisations unavailable
Limitations
- Emulation covers user-mode code only. Microsoft's documentation states that emulation does not support drivers and that any kernel-mode component must be compiled as Arm64. A kernel anti-cheat driver therefore cannot run under Prism at all — this is a design boundary, not a bug awaiting a patch.
- What decides whether an online game launches is its anti-cheat, not its engine. A game can emulate perfectly well and still refuse to start because its protection layer will not load.
- Easy Anti-Cheat has had an Arm64 client since 2025, but each publisher must ship it. A community tracker lists Fortnite as the only confirmed working EAC title as of mid-2026, with Rust, Sea of Thieves, Rocket League and Deep Rock Galactic still blocked, and Halo: The Master Chief Collection blocked in multiplayer.
- Riot Vanguard has no Arm64 kernel driver, so VALORANT and League of Legends will not install or run.
- Roblox and the HoYoverse titles (Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, Zenless Zone Zero) use kernel anti-cheat with no Arm64 build and are reported blocked.
- BattlEye has been Arm-capable since Windows 11 24H2 but is enabled per game, so a BattlEye title is not automatically safe — Destiny 2 and the GTA V Enhanced client are reported to still crash on launch.
- Emulated x64 games pay a translation cost on top of integrated graphics, so expect lower settings than a similarly priced x86 laptop delivers.
- On Windows 10 on Arm, Microsoft states that games using a version of OpenGL greater than 1.1 do not work.
How to set it up
- Before buying, write down the games you actually play and check each one individually rather than trusting a headline compatibility figure. Microsoft's own Arm PC FAQ points readers to worksonwoa.com, alongside asking the game's publisher directly.
- For each game, find out which anti-cheat it uses — that is the single best predictor of whether it will launch. User-mode systems such as Valve Anti-Cheat do not gate startup under emulation; kernel-level systems (Easy Anti-Cheat, BattlEye, Vanguard, Hyperion, mhyprot) do, and need a publisher-supplied Arm64 build.
- Confirm the laptop is on Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, which is where Prism ships. Press Win+R and run winver to check.
winver - Test before you commit. Install one game you already own and play it inside the retailer's return window or Steam's refund window — that is a far more reliable compatibility check than any list, including this page.
Known problems
- Games with kernel-level anti-cheat may separately require Secure Boot on Windows 11. That is a different requirement from the Arm64 one and applies on x86 machines too. · how to fix it
- Arm builds of Microsoft's own apps have had their own launch regressions — Teams and the new Outlook failed to start on Arm PCs after an August 2026 update. · how to fix it
Alternatives
- Cloud gaming (GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming): The game runs on remote x86 hardware, so anti-cheat never sees an Arm CPU. It is the only practical route to VALORANT-class titles on an Arm laptop, and it trades a compatibility problem for a dependency on your connection.
- An x86 laptop (Intel or AMD): If the games you rely on use Vanguard, Hyperion or an EAC title that has not shipped the Arm64 client, nothing you can change on an Arm laptop will make them launch.
Common questions
- Will my Steam library just work on a Snapdragon laptop?
- Partly. Steam itself runs, and games without a kernel anti-cheat driver generally launch under Prism emulation, though at lower performance than an x86 laptop of similar price. Online games are where it breaks down: the ones that load a kernel-level anti-cheat driver will refuse to start unless the publisher has shipped an Arm64 build of that anti-cheat.
- Why can't Windows just emulate the anti-cheat driver too?
- Microsoft's documentation is explicit that emulation only supports user-mode code and does not support drivers, and that any kernel-mode component must be compiled as Arm64. Emulating an anti-cheat driver would mean emulating code running inside the kernel itself, which Prism does not do. That is why this is a wall rather than a slowdown.
- Does Fortnite work?
- It is reported to. Epic shipped an Arm64 Easy Anti-Cheat client through its Epic Online Services SDK, and Fortnite was the first title to adopt it. That makes it the exception among Easy Anti-Cheat games rather than the rule — every other EAC title has to ship the updated SDK before it will launch on Arm.
- Does VALORANT work?
- No. Riot Vanguard has no Arm64 kernel driver, so it will not install on Windows on Arm and the game will not run. League of Legends is blocked for the same reason. Riot has signalled future native support on other Arm hardware, but nothing has shipped for Snapdragon laptops.
- Is the Snapdragon X2 better for this?
- It helps with speed, not with anti-cheat. A faster chip and broader emulation support raise frame rates in games that already run, but a blocked anti-cheat driver is a compatibility wall rather than a performance one, and no processor upgrade moves it.
- Does Counter-Strike 2 work?
- It is reported to run. Valve Anti-Cheat is largely user-mode, so it does not block emulation the way a kernel driver does. Performance under Prism varies, and low frame rates early in a match are commonly reported.
- How many games are actually affected?
- Nobody publishes an authoritative count, and any number goes stale quickly. For scale, one community tracker focused specifically on anti-cheat titles lists 61 well-known games, of which 5 are confirmed working, 15 are confirmed blocked and 41 are unconfirmed. That sample is deliberately weighted towards online games, so it understates how well single-player titles do.
