War Thunder driver timeout on Radeon: RX 5000, RX 6000 and RX 9000 need opposite fixes

Last verified October 2026Tested against AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.8.1 (20 August 2026), AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.9.1 (3 September 2026), AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.9.2 (29 September 2026) - lists the RX 5000 timeout as open, Radeon RX 5000 series (RDNA 1), Radeon RX 6000 series (RDNA 2), Radeon RX 9000 series (RDNA 4), War Thunder in DirectX 12 mode, Windows 10, Windows 11Good evidence

AMD has documented three different War Thunder driver timeouts on three Radeon generations, and the right move is opposite depending on your card. On an RX 5000 card, 26.9.2 is the problem: AMD lists the timeout as an open issue there and tells you to install 26.9.1 instead. On an RX 6000 card, 26.9.2 is the fix - AMD lists that variant, tied to DirectX 12 with Instant Replay and Borderless Region Capture, under Fixed Issues. On an RX 9000 card the reports point at 26.8.1 and the forum thread's author says 26.9.1 cleared it. So check your card before you change anything, because updating helps one group and breaks another.

A driver timeout is Windows resetting the graphics card because it stopped responding; you usually see "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered", a flicker, and either a crash to desktop or a frozen game. That one symptom has at least three different causes in War Thunder on Radeon hardware right now, and you cannot tell them apart from the symptom. Working it out from AMD's own material means diffing three separate release-note pages, and the RX 9000 case is not in any of them - the only place anyone at AMD links War Thunder to that driver is a relayed quote on Gaijin's forum. This page does that comparison for you.

Symptoms

  • A notification reading "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered", usually with a brief screen flicker
  • War Thunder freezes or crashes to desktop, often shortly after logging in
  • It happens in DirectX 12 and not in DirectX 11
  • The game was stable before you updated AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition
  • On repeated hangs in quick succession, a VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (0x116) bugcheck instead of a recovery - Microsoft's default threshold is more than five TDRs in one minute

Why this happens

RX 5000: a regression AMD introduced in Adrenalin 26.9.2

AMD's 26.9.2 release notes, last updated 29 September 2026, list under Known Issues: "Intermittent driver timeout may be observed while playing War Thunder on Radeon RX 5000 series graphics products. Users experiencing this issue are recommended to install AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.9.1." This is the current, open variant and the one most likely to be new to you, because 26.9.2 is the newest release. AMD publishes its own remedy here, which is unusual and worth taking at face value: go to 26.9.1. The 26.9.1 notes carry no War Thunder entry under either Fixed Issues or Known Issues, which is consistent with that advice.

RX 6000: a DirectX 12 capture-feature interaction, fixed in 26.9.2

AMD's 26.9.2 notes list under Fixed Issues: "Intermittent driver timeout may be observed while playing War Thunder in DirectX 12 mode with Instant Replay and Borderless Region Capture enabled on Radeon RX 6000 series graphics products." Two things follow. First, if you are on an RX 6000 card and on anything older than 26.9.2, updating is the published fix. Second, the wording names the trigger - DirectX 12 plus those two capture features - so turning them off is a reasonable thing to try before changing drivers at all. AMD does not present that as a workaround, but it is the condition AMD itself attached to the fault.

RX 9000: reported against 26.8.1 and never written into AMD's notes

This is the variant you will not find in AMD's release notes. A thread on the official War Thunder forum running 21 August to 3 September 2026 collects reports from roughly seven distinct users of timeouts on Adrenalin 26.8.1, several naming the RX 9070 XT, with DirectX 11 working where DirectX 12 failed. A post there quotes AMD representative AMD_Matt saying "There is a issue under investigation with this driver when running Apex Legends/War Thunder DX12 causing a driver timeout/hang." That is a relayed forum quote rather than AMD documentation, so treat it as such - but it is the only link between War Thunder and this driver from anyone at AMD. AMD's 26.9.1 notes then list Starfield and Apex Legends crashes on RX 9000 as fixed, naming neither War Thunder nor a timeout, and the thread's author reported that on 26.9.1 "Everything works fine now!". The reasonable reading is that the War Thunder case rode along with that Apex Legends work.

What a driver timeout actually is

Microsoft's Timeout Detection and Recovery is, in its words, "a feature in Windows that detects when the graphics card takes longer than expected to complete an operation. It then resets the graphics card to prevent the entire system from becoming unresponsive." The default timeout is two seconds. When recovery works you get a flicker and the message "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered", logged in Event Viewer. When it does not, or when five or more hangs happen inside a minute, Windows bug-checks on the sixth. Microsoft also notes that some DirectX applications "might just render black at the end of this recovery", which is why the game sometimes has to be restarted even though Windows recovered.

Find your Radeon generation and driver version first - the right answer is opposite for different cards

about 3 min

AMD has documented three separate War Thunder timeouts on three card generations, and the correct action on one is the wrong action on another. This step decides which of them you have.

Applies to: Radeon RX 5000, RX 6000, RX 7000 and RX 9000 series, Windows 10, Windows 11

  1. Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition and read your driver version on the Home or Settings > System tab. Note the full number, for example 26.9.2.
  2. Note your card. RX 5000 series means RX 5300/5500/5600/5700 (and the M mobile variants). RX 6000 means RX 6400 through RX 6900. RX 9000 means cards such as the RX 9070 XT.
  3. RX 5000 on 26.9.2: this is the issue AMD currently lists as open, and AMD's own advice is to install 26.9.1 instead. Go to that step below.
  4. RX 6000 on anything earlier than 26.9.2: AMD fixed your variant in 26.9.2. Updating is the fix, not a gamble. AMD's wording ties it to DirectX 12 with Instant Replay and Borderless Region Capture enabled.
  5. RX 9000 on 26.8.1: this is the one AMD never wrote down. Forum reports tie it to DirectX 12 on 26.8.1 and the thread's author reports 26.9.1 cleared it, so move forward to 26.9.1 or later rather than rolling back.
  6. If your card is RX 7000, note that AMD lists a separate Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced timeout on that generation in 26.9.2 - a different game, and not this problem.

Confirmed by the vendor.

Turn off Instant Replay and Borderless Region Capture

about 5 min

AMD's description of the RX 6000 variant names these two capture features, in DirectX 12, as the conditions under which the timeout appears. Switching them off is free and instantly reversible, so it is worth trying before you touch drivers.

Applies to: Radeon RX 6000 series in particular, Any Radeon card using Instant Replay or Borderless Region Capture

  1. Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition and go to the Record & Stream tab.
  2. Turn Instant Replay off.
  3. In the same area, turn Borderless Region Capture off.
  4. Restart War Thunder and play a session long enough that you would normally have seen the timeout.
  5. If that stops it, you have confirmed the trigger. You can leave them off, or update to 26.9.2 or later and turn them back on - AMD lists that variant as fixed there.

Confirmed by the vendor.

Switch War Thunder from DirectX 12 to DirectX 11

about 10 min

Every variant of this fault names DirectX 12 - AMD's own wording for the RX 6000 case, and the player reports for RX 9000. If DirectX 11 is stable you can keep playing while you sort the driver out, and you have confirmed which code path is at fault.

Applies to: War Thunder on Windows, Radeon RX 5000, RX 6000 and RX 9000 series

  1. In War Thunder's graphics options, find the Graphics API / Render setting and select DirectX 11. This is the route a Gaijin staff member gives on the official forum.
  2. Apply the change and fully restart the game - a staff member notes the restart is required, not optional.
  3. If the in-game setting will not take, open the War Thunder launcher's settings and select Render DX11 there instead, which the same staff member offers as an alternative.
  4. Play a session. If the timeouts stop, the DirectX 12 path is where the fault is, which matches AMD's wording for the RX 6000 variant and the player reports for RX 9000.
  5. Be aware this does not always stick. Several users on that same official forum thread report the game forcing DirectX 12 back regardless of the setting, one of them after a full reinstall. If that happens to you, this route is a dead end rather than evidence about your driver - move on to the driver steps below.
  6. Treat it as a stopgap either way. DirectX 11 can cost you performance, so return to DirectX 12 once you are on a driver that fixes your variant.

Confirmed by the vendor, though some users report it does not help.

RX 6000 and RX 9000: update to 26.9.2 or later

about 20 min

For the RX 6000 variant this is AMD's published fix, not a guess. For RX 9000 on 26.8.1, the fix landed in 26.9.1 and 26.9.2 is later still.

Applies to: Radeon RX 6000 series, Radeon RX 9000 series

  1. Download the current AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition release from AMD's own download page, or use the Check for Updates button inside Adrenalin.
  2. Install it and restart when asked.
  3. Open Adrenalin and confirm the version now reads 26.9.2 or later.
  4. Launch War Thunder in DirectX 12 and play a long enough session to be sure. If you turned off Instant Replay or Borderless Region Capture earlier, you can turn them back on now and re-test.
  5. Do not do this on an RX 5000 card. 26.9.2 is the release where AMD lists the RX 5000 timeout as an open issue, so updating is the wrong direction for that card.

Confirmed by the vendor.

RX 5000: install Adrenalin 26.9.1 instead of 26.9.2

Check before applyingabout 30 min

This is AMD's own instruction for this card and this game: the 26.9.2 known-issues entry tells affected RX 5000 users to install 26.9.1. 26.9.1 carries no War Thunder entry at all.

Applies to: Radeon RX 5000 series (RX 5300, 5500, 5600, 5700 and mobile variants), Windows 10, Windows 11

Before you do this

This is a deliberate downgrade, so you give up what the newer driver brings: 26.9.2 added game support for The Witcher 3 Remastered, Gears of War: E-Day, CONTROL Resonant, Minecraft Dungeons II, Valor Mortis and Modern Warfare 4 campaign early access, and fixed timeouts in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and HITMAN World of Assassination. Running the AMD Cleanup Utility removes your current driver and restarts the machine, so download 26.9.1 first and close your work. Expect the screen to blank briefly during install.

  1. Download AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.9.1 from AMD's own release-notes or downloads page before you remove anything.
  2. Because this is a downgrade, use the AMD Cleanup Utility first - AMD states that when downgrading to a previous version of Adrenalin it is recommended to use it.
  3. Run the cleanup utility, let it restart the machine, then install 26.9.1.
  4. Open Adrenalin and confirm the version reads 26.9.1.
  5. Launch War Thunder and test with a long session. If the timeouts continue on 26.9.1, your problem is not the issue AMD documented - see the section on when something else is wrong.
  6. Check AMD's release notes before taking a later driver, so you do not land back on a release that still lists this issue for your card.

Confirmed by the vendor.

RX 9000 last resort: roll back to 26.7.1

Check before applyingabout 30 min

Only if you are on an RX 9000 card, still timing out, and 26.9.1 or later has not helped. Several players on the official forum reported 26.7.1 stopped the timeouts on 26.8.1-era systems.

Applies to: Radeon RX 9000 series, Windows 10, Windows 11

Before you do this

This drops you back to July 2026, giving up every game-support addition and fix in 26.8.1, 26.9.1 and 26.9.2 - including the Starfield and Apex Legends crash fixes AMD shipped for RX 9000 cards in 26.9.1. AMD never published 26.7.1 as the remedy for War Thunder; its 26.7.1 recommendation was for Starfield. This rests on player reports, so treat it as a last resort and re-test newer drivers rather than settling here.

  1. Try 26.9.1 or later first. The forum thread's own author reported the problem gone on 26.9.1, and AMD fixed two other RX 9000 crashes in that release, so rolling this far back is rarely necessary now.
  2. Download Adrenalin 26.7.1 before removing your current driver.
  3. Run the AMD Cleanup Utility, as AMD recommends for any downgrade, and let it restart the machine.
  4. Install 26.7.1 and confirm the version in Adrenalin.
  5. Test with a long session in DirectX 12. If this is what it takes, note that you are several releases behind and should re-test each new driver.

Reported to work by 3 users; not confirmed by the vendor.

Known issues

  • Open on RX 5000. AMD's 26.9.2 notes, last updated 29 September 2026, list an intermittent War Thunder driver timeout on Radeon RX 5000 series cards under Known Issues, and recommend installing 26.9.1 instead. No fix has shipped and AMD has published no in-game workaround.

Affects AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.9.2, Radeon RX 5000 series · Status: workaround only

  • Fixed on RX 6000. The same 26.9.2 notes list the War Thunder timeout in DirectX 12 with Instant Replay and Borderless Region Capture enabled on Radeon RX 6000 cards under Fixed Issues. If you are on an RX 6000 card and an older driver, updating resolves it.

Affects AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.9.2, Radeon RX 6000 series · Status: fixed

  • Undocumented on RX 9000. AMD never listed a War Thunder issue in the 26.8.1 or 26.9.1 notes. Players reported it on the official War Thunder forum, an AMD representative was quoted there acknowledging an Apex Legends/War Thunder DirectX 12 timeout under investigation, and 26.9.1 - which fixed Starfield and Apex Legends crashes on RX 9000 without naming War Thunder - is reported by the thread's author to have cleared it. Its official status is therefore unknown rather than fixed.

Affects AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.8.1, Radeon RX 9000 series · Status: unknown

  • Whichever driver you move to carries its own open issues. As of 26.9.2 AMD still lists the AI Bundle components failing to install in regions with limited access to HuggingFace and GitHub, AMD Smart Access Memory becoming disabled after installation on Windows 10, and an intermittent crash or driver timeout in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced on Radeon RX 7000 cards.

If none of this worked

If the timeouts continue on the driver AMD recommends for your card, this is probably not the documented issue. A timeout is a generic symptom, and Microsoft lists non-driver causes for the same bug check: over-clocked components, incorrect component compatibility and settings, insufficient system cooling, insufficient system power, defective parts such as memory or the motherboard, and too many programs running in the background. None of those is fixed by changing driver version. Two things players specifically reported not helping: deleting the shader cache and temporary War Thunder files, and reinstalling the same driver version. If your card is an RX 7000, AMD lists a separate Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced timeout on that generation, which is a different entry. And if your Apex Legends or Starfield crashes on an RX 9000 card rather than War Thunder, that regression has its own page.

Common questions

Should I install 26.9.1 or 26.9.2?
It depends entirely on your card, which is the whole point of this page. On an RX 5000 card, 26.9.1 - AMD's 26.9.2 notes explicitly tell affected RX 5000 users to install it. On an RX 6000 card, 26.9.2, because that is where AMD fixed your variant. On an RX 9000 card, 26.9.1 or later is fine; the reports were against 26.8.1. Installing the newest driver as a reflex is what gets RX 5000 owners into this.
Why does AMD's page not mention War Thunder for my RX 9000 card?
Because AMD never wrote it down. Its 26.8.1 known issues name Starfield on RX 9000 and recommend 26.7.1; its 26.9.1 fixed list names Starfield and Apex Legends. War Thunder appears in neither. The only connection from AMD's side is a representative quoted on the official War Thunder forum acknowledging an Apex Legends/War Thunder DirectX 12 timeout under investigation, which is a forum quote rather than documentation. That gap is exactly why the symptom is hard to research.
Is switching to DirectX 11 a real fix or just avoidance?
Avoidance, but informative avoidance. Every version of this fault names DirectX 12 - AMD's own wording for the RX 6000 variant, and the player reports for RX 9000. If DirectX 11 is stable, you have confirmed which code path is at fault and you can keep playing while you sort out the driver. Two caveats: it can cost performance, and several users on the official forum report War Thunder forcing DirectX 12 back regardless of the setting, so the switch does not always take.
Do I need to use the AMD Cleanup Utility to downgrade?
AMD recommends it. Its release notes state that when downgrading to a previous version of Adrenalin it is recommended to use the AMD Cleanup Utility. Download the driver you intend to install before running it, because the utility removes your current driver and restarts the machine.
Will a driver timeout damage my graphics card?
No. Microsoft describes timeout detection and recovery as a protective mechanism: Windows notices the GPU has stopped responding and resets it rather than letting the whole system hang. The visible result is a flicker and a notification. Repeated hangs in quick succession will bug-check the machine, which is disruptive but is still Windows protecting itself rather than a sign of hardware damage.
