Valor Mortis shuts the PC down or crashes on Radeon RX 7000 cards

Last verified October 2026Tested against AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.10.1 (20 October 2026) — current release; lists both Valor Mortis entries as open, Radeon RX 7600 series — AMD-acknowledged intermittent system shutdown, no workaround, Radeon RX 7000 series — AMD-acknowledged intermittent driver timeout, no workaround, Radeon RX 7900 XT — developer-acknowledged GPU crashes during gameplay, Radeon RX 9000 series — FSR Frame Generation crash when switching apps, V-Sync workaround, Valor Mortis launch build (13 October 2026) and the Second Update (21 October 2026), Windows 10 and Windows 11Well documented

If your PC powers off completely while playing Valor Mortis, do not start replacing hardware. AMD has acknowledged an intermittent system shutdown in this game on Radeon RX 7600 series cards, and its support article says there is no workaround yet. That is one of four separate Radeon faults: AMD also lists a driver timeout across RX 7000, and the developer lists GPU crashes on the RX 7900 XT plus a broken Anti-Lag 2. Which one you have depends on your exact card, so confirm the model before changing anything. Ordinary crashes to desktop are a different problem, happen on NVIDIA too, and are being patched.

Valor Mortis launched on 13 October 2026 and both AMD and the developer published known-issue notices about Radeon hardware within a week. The entries are easy to conflate, because they describe four different failures with different scopes and only one of them has anything resembling a fix. The most alarming of them — the whole machine cutting out mid-game — is also the one most likely to send someone shopping for a power supply they do not need.

Symptoms

  • The whole PC powers off without warning during gameplay — no blue screen, no error, the machine simply goes dark and the fans stop
  • The PC restarts on its own and Event Viewer shows Kernel-Power Event ID 41 for that moment
  • The screen goes black for a few seconds and recovers, with a notification that the display driver stopped responding
  • The game crashes to desktop during gameplay on a Radeon RX 7900 XT
  • AMD Anti-Lag 2 shows as enabled in Adrenalin but appears to do nothing in this game
  • On a Radeon RX 9000 card, the game or the whole system hangs the moment you alt-tab away or an overlay opens, with FSR Frame Generation on
  • Crashes on launch, during level loading or at one specific location — these also affect NVIDIA players

Why this happens

An open AMD driver bug shuts the system down on RX 7600 series cards

AMD publishes a dedicated support article for this, PA-360, which states that a system shutdown may be observed while playing Valor Mortis on Radeon RX 7600 series graphics products, and that there is currently no workaround available while AMD works on a fix. The same entry appears under Known Issues in the Adrenalin 26.10.1 release notes of 20 October 2026, which is AMD's current release — so the newest driver does not fix it, it documents it. Note the scope carefully: AMD says 'RX 7600 series', while the developer's post names the 'RX 7600'. Those two wordings are not identical, and neither source resolves whether a particular RX 7600 XT is in or out.

Confirm your exact card model before anything else · If the PC powers off, check what Windows recorded before blaming the power supply

A second, separate AMD entry covers driver timeouts across RX 7000

The 26.10.1 notes list an intermittent driver timeout while playing Valor Mortis on Radeon RX 7000 series products as its own Known Issue, distinct from the RX 7600 shutdown. A driver timeout is the black-screen-and-recover behaviour, not a power-off, so if your machine stays on and the display driver resets, this is the entry that describes you. AMD publishes no workaround for it either.

Confirm your exact card model before anything else · Be on Adrenalin 26.10.1 — but know that it does not fix the shutdown

The developer separately acknowledged RX 7900 XT crashes and a broken Anti-Lag 2

One More Level's pinned launch-day post says some AMD Radeon 7000 series GPUs may experience issues, 'most notably' system shutdown on the RX 7600, GPU crashes during gameplay on the RX 7900 XT, and AMD Anti-Lag 2 not working properly. The RX 7900 XT crash and the Anti-Lag 2 fault appear nowhere in AMD's notes, just as AMD's RX 7000 driver timeout appears nowhere in the developer's post. Neither party has the whole list, which is why the two have to be read together.

Ordinary game crashes, which are not GPU-vendor specific and are being patched

Valor Mortis also has a stock of crashes unrelated to any Radeon entry — on launch, during loading, and at particular locations. Nothing in the developer's notices scopes these to Radeon: its launch-day post asks players on both AMD and NVIDIA cards to update their drivers, and the crash fixes it has shipped are not described as vendor-specific. The Second Update of 21 October 2026 lists 'Fixed multiple crashes' without saying which, and players replying to that post disagree about whether it helped them. If a crash leaves the machine running, it is far more likely to be one of these than either AMD entry.

On RX 9000, FSR Frame Generation plus app switching is its own documented crash

Independently of this game, 26.10.1 lists an intermittent system crash or hang when switching between applications or toggling overlays while playing with in-game AMD FSR Frame Generation enabled on Radeon RX 9000 series products. This is the one Radeon fault in play here for which AMD does publish a workaround: enable V-Sync in the game's settings. If your crash reliably happens at the moment you alt-tab, start here rather than with the Valor Mortis entries.

Fixes

Confirm your exact card model before anything else

about 3 min

The four acknowledged faults map to different cards, and the right expectation — fix available, workaround available, or nothing yet — depends entirely on which one you have.

Applies to: All Radeon cards, Windows 10, Windows 11

  1. Press Windows+R, enter dxdiag, open the Display tab and read the exact adapter name. Use this rather than what the box said: 'RX 7600' and 'RX 7600 XT' are different entries in the model range even though AMD's notice is written at series level.
    dxdiag
  2. Match it against the acknowledged list. RX 7600 series: AMD acknowledges an intermittent system shutdown, with no workaround. RX 7000 generally: AMD acknowledges an intermittent driver timeout, with no workaround. RX 7900 XT: the developer acknowledges GPU crashes during gameplay. RX 9000: AMD's FSR Frame Generation entry applies and does have a workaround.
  3. If your card is not on that list, none of these notices is about your machine, and anyone telling you AMD has acknowledged your crash is overreading the notes. Skip to the game-patch step and to 'When something else is wrong' below.

If the PC powers off, check what Windows recorded before blaming the power supply

about 10 min

A driver-induced shutdown and a failing power supply look identical from the chair. The event log will not name AMD, but it does tell you whether Windows got far enough to record a stop code — and that is what decides whether hardware checks are worth your time.

Applies to: Windows 10, Windows 11

  1. Open Event Viewer, go to Windows Logs > System and find the Kernel-Power entry with Event ID 41 at the time the machine went down. Or list the last few from PowerShell:
    Get-WinEvent -FilterHashtable @{LogName='System'; ID=41} -MaxEvents 5 | Format-List TimeCreated, Message
  2. Read the BugcheckCode in the event data. Microsoft's guidance is that it is written in decimal and has to be converted to hexadecimal before you look it up. A non-zero code means Windows did record a stop error, which gives you something specific to search for.
  3. If the BugcheckCode and the PowerButtonTimestamp are both zero, Microsoft's own documentation describes this as usually a hardware or device-driver problem, and lists overclocking, memory, power-supply wattage and overheating as what to check. Note what that means here: Event 41 is consistent with the acknowledged Radeon driver bug, but it does not prove it. If you are overclocking or undervolting the card, set it back to stock before concluding anything.
  4. Be honest with yourself about scope. If the machine also powers off in other games, or at the desktop, this page is not your answer — an acknowledged bug in one game does not explain a shutdown that happens outside it.

Install the latest game update

about 5 min

The developer has shipped crash fixes twice since launch, and the ones it fixed are the crashes that leave your machine running.

Applies to: Valor Mortis on Steam

  1. In Steam, right-click Valor Mortis > Properties > Updates and confirm the game is current, then restart Steam if an update is pending.
  2. Check what you are getting: the Second Update of 21 October 2026 lists 'Fixed multiple crashes' among its bug fixes, but does not say which crashes, and does not name AMD, the RX 7600 or the system shutdown anywhere in its notes.
  3. Set your expectations accordingly. Players replying to those patch notes disagree about whether the update cleared their crashes, and a reply asking specifically about RX 7600 issues was answered by pointing to support rather than with a fix. Treat this as worth doing, not as the answer to the shutdown.

Confirmed by the vendor, though some users report it does not help.

Be on Adrenalin 26.10.1 — but know that it does not fix the shutdown

about 15 min

The developer asks for current drivers, and 26.10.1 is the release AMD's Valor Mortis entries are written against, so it is the baseline any further diagnosis should start from.

Applies to: All supported Radeon cards

  1. Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition > Home > check for updates, or download 26.10.1 from AMD directly. The developer explicitly asks players to update drivers to the latest version for both AMD and NVIDIA cards before launching the game.
  2. Understand what updating does and does not buy you. Both Valor Mortis entries are listed as Known Issues in 26.10.1 itself, which means this release documents them rather than resolving them. 26.10.1 did fix a Modern Warfare 4 stuttering issue, so it is worth being on regardless — just not as a cure for this.
  3. Do not roll back on spec. AMD does recommend a specific older driver for a different game in these same notes — 26.9.1 for War Thunder timeouts on RX 5000 — but it recommends nothing of the kind for Valor Mortis, and the game postdates the previous release, so there is no known-good version to go back to. If you downgrade anyway, AMD's notes say to use the AMD Cleanup Utility.

Confirmed by the vendor.

Turn off AMD Anti-Lag 2 for this game

about 3 min

The developer lists Anti-Lag 2 as not working properly in Valor Mortis, so leaving it on keeps a known-faulty feature in the loop while you are trying to isolate a crash.

Applies to: Radeon RX 7000 series, Cards supporting AMD Anti-Lag 2

  1. In AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, open Gaming, select Valor Mortis, and set Anti-Lag to Disabled for that title rather than globally.
  2. Relaunch and retest. Note the limit of this one honestly: the developer says Anti-Lag 2 may not work properly, which is a statement that the feature is broken here — not a claim from either vendor that disabling it stops the shutdowns or the crashes.

Confirmed by the vendor.

RX 9000 with FSR Frame Generation: enable V-Sync in the game

about 5 min

This is the one Radeon fault here that AMD actually publishes a workaround for, and it matches a specific trigger — the crash happening as you switch away from the game.

Applies to: Radeon RX 9000 series, In-game AMD FSR Frame Generation

  1. Confirm the trigger first: the crash or hang happens when you alt-tab between applications, or when an overlay such as Xbox Game Bar opens or closes, and you have in-game AMD FSR Frame Generation enabled on an RX 9000 series card.
  2. Enable V-Sync in the game's own graphics settings — AMD's recommendation is for the in-game setting, not the driver-level one.
  3. If the crash happens with FSR Frame Generation off, this entry is not your problem and you should stop here. AMD lists a separate crash tied to the Adrenalin Performance Metrics Overlay being enabled while other overlays open or close; if you run that overlay, disable it temporarily and retest.

Confirmed by the vendor.

Known issues

  • Open with no workaround: system shutdown on Radeon RX 7600 series. AMD's support article PA-360 says a system shutdown may be observed while playing Valor Mortis on RX 7600 series products, that there is currently no workaround available, and that AMD is working on a fix and will update that article once there is one. The same entry sits under Known Issues in 26.10.1, AMD's current release. Re-checked 25 October 2026: still no fix.

  • Open with no workaround: intermittent driver timeout on Radeon RX 7000 series. Listed as its own Known Issue in the 26.10.1 notes, separate from the RX 7600 shutdown entry. AMD publishes no workaround and no fix target. Unlike the War Thunder entry in the same notes, which tells RX 5000 users to install 26.9.1, neither Valor Mortis entry names an alternative driver.

Affects AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.10.1, Radeon RX 7000 series · Status: open

  • Open, developer-acknowledged only: GPU crashes during gameplay on the Radeon RX 7900 XT, and AMD Anti-Lag 2 not working properly. Both come from One More Level's pinned launch-day post of 13 October 2026, which says it is actively working with AMD to solve these issues. Neither appears in any AMD release note or support article, so there is no vendor-published workaround for either.

  • Partially addressed: general crashes not tied to any Radeon entry. The Second Update of 21 October 2026 lists 'Fixed multiple crashes' among its bug fixes but does not enumerate them or name a GPU vendor, and also revised the in-game GPU driver popup. Player replies to the post disagree about whether it cleared their crashes, and reports at specific locations continued after it. A reply asking about RX 7600 issues was answered by pointing to support rather than with a fix.

  • Workaround published: system crash or hang when switching applications or toggling overlays with in-game AMD FSR Frame Generation enabled on Radeon RX 9000 series. AMD's 26.10.1 notes recommend enabling V-Sync in game settings. This is a general entry rather than a Valor Mortis one, but it is the only Radeon fault relevant to this game with a vendor-published workaround.

If none of this worked

If the machine stays on and the game closes to the desktop, neither AMD entry describes you — those are the ordinary crashes the developer has been patching, and nothing in its notices scopes them to Radeon: the launch-day post asks players on both AMD and NVIDIA cards to update their drivers. If the PC powers off in other games or at the desktop as well, stop treating this as a Valor Mortis problem: an acknowledged bug in one game cannot explain shutdowns outside it, and Microsoft's checks for an Event 41 with no stop code — overclocking, memory, power-supply wattage, overheating — are the right path. Be careful with the card-model question too: AMD writes 'RX 7600 series' and the developer writes 'RX 7600', and neither says whether a given RX 7600 XT is in scope, so posts treating XT reports as confirmed go beyond both sources. Finally, many numbered 'fix' lists for this game recycle generic Unreal Engine advice — verify files, reinstall redistributables, disable overlays — with no reference to either vendor notice. None of it addresses a whole-system power-off.

Common questions

Is my power supply failing?
Possibly, but do not assume it before checking the cheaper explanation. If you have an RX 7600 series card and the shutdowns only happen in Valor Mortis, AMD has acknowledged an intermittent system shutdown in exactly that combination and says there is no workaround yet — that is a software bug, not your hardware. A failing supply would not normally confine itself to a single title, so shutdowns that happen only in this game point away from it. Microsoft's own guidance for an Event 41 with no stop code does list power-supply wattage among what to check, so it stays on the list, just not at the top of it.
Is the RX 7600 XT affected?
Nobody has said clearly. AMD's support article and release notes are written at series level — 'Radeon RX 7600 series graphics products' — which would normally include the XT. The developer's post names the 'RX 7600' specifically. Neither source addresses the XT by name, so the honest answer is that AMD's wording would cover it and the developer's would not, and we are not going to resolve that for them.
Will rolling back the driver help?
There is no known-good version to roll back to. AMD does recommend an older driver for a different game in these same notes — 26.9.1 for War Thunder timeouts on RX 5000 — but it recommends nothing of the sort for Valor Mortis. The game launched on 13 October 2026, after the previous Adrenalin release, so earlier drivers were never validated against it. If you downgrade anyway, AMD's notes say to use the AMD Cleanup Utility first.
Has AMD fixed it yet?
Not as of 25 October 2026. AMD's PA-360 article still reads 'There is currently no workaround available' and says AMD is actively working on a fix and will update that article once a resolution is available, and the shutdown is still listed under Known Issues in 26.10.1, the current release. That article is the place to watch, since AMD has committed to updating it.
Does updating to 26.10.1 fix any of this?
Not the Valor Mortis faults. Both of them are listed as Known Issues in 26.10.1 itself, which means that release documents them rather than resolving them. It is still the version worth being on — the developer asks for current drivers, and 26.10.1 fixed a separate Modern Warfare 4 stuttering issue — but updating is a baseline, not a fix.
