Judgment, Lost Judgment and Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. won't launch after the NVIDIA 616.56 driver
Update your NVIDIA driver to Game Ready 617.14 or later. NVIDIA's release notes for 617.14, published 22 September 2026, list "Judgement/Lost Judgement/ Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. may fail to launch after updating to driver 616.56 [6681537]" under fixed gaming bugs, so the regression that broke these three games is resolved in the driver itself. There is nothing wrong with your game files, and the rollback this page recommended while the bug was open is no longer necessary.
This one changed direction. Three RGG Studio titles stopped launching after NVIDIA's 616.56 driver, and for nearly a month the only answer was to go backwards — the two drivers released in between, 616.64 and 616.92, fixed no gaming bugs at all. NVIDIA closed it in 617.14 on 22 September 2026, listing bug 6681537 under fixed gaming bugs. So the ordinary instinct to install the latest driver is now the right one, which it was not a week ago.
Symptoms
- Judgment, Lost Judgment or Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. does nothing when you press Play, or its process appears and exits within seconds
- No error message, or only a generic crash dialog
- The game launched normally before you updated your NVIDIA driver
- Other games on the same PC still launch fine
- You are on GeForce driver 616.56, 616.64 or 616.92 — that is, you have not yet installed 617.14 or later
Why this happens
A launch regression introduced in GeForce driver 616.56
NVIDIA's release notes for 616.92 listed the failure under "Open Issues in Version 616.92 WHQL" as "Judgement/Lost Judgement/ Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. may fail to launch after updating to driver 616.56 [6681537]". The wording ties it to updating to 616.56, and it is absent from the open-issues lists published with 616.56 and 616.64, so NVIDIA documented it only when 616.92 shipped — two weeks after the driver that caused it. The same bug number then appears under "Fixed Gaming Bugs" in the 617.14 release notes of 22 September 2026, which is NVIDIA confirming both that it owned the regression and that the driver now carries the fix.

Fixes
Confirm the driver version before you touch the game
about 3 minIf you are on a driver between 616.56 and 616.92 and the game launched before you updated, the driver is the thing to change — and verifying game files or reinstalling will waste an hour for nothing.
Applies to: GeForce Game Ready 616.56 through 616.92
- Open the NVIDIA app, or the NVIDIA Control Panel and choose Help then System Information, and read the driver version.
- If it reads 616.56, 616.64 or 616.92, you are on a driver NVIDIA associates with this failure, and the fix in 617.14 has not reached you yet.
- If it reads 617.14 or later, this bug is already fixed on your machine and something else is stopping the game — see the section below.
- Check that the game used to launch on this PC before the driver changed. If it has never launched, this is not your problem and the driver is not the place to look.
- Do not start by verifying game files or reinstalling the game; NVIDIA's notes put this in the driver.
Confirmed by the vendor.
Update to Game Ready 617.14 or later
about 15 minNVIDIA lists this exact failure, by its own bug number 6681537, under the fixed gaming bugs for 617.14.
Applies to: Windows 11, Windows 10, GeForce GPUs
- Download the 617.14 Game Ready driver from NVIDIA's driver downloads, or open the NVIDIA app and check for updates on the Drivers tab.
- Install it and restart if prompted.
- Launch Judgment, Lost Judgment or Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. It should start normally.
- If you had already rolled back to a pre-616.56 driver to work around this, you can move forward to 617.14 now and get back the display fixes and Game Ready optimisations you gave up.
Confirmed by the vendor.

Roll the display driver back, if you cannot install 617.14
Check before applyingabout 10 minOnly worth doing if something stops you updating. Returning to the driver installed before 616.56 also removes the cause, and reuses the copy Windows already kept.
Applies to: Windows 11, Windows 10
Before you do this
Rolling back leaves you on an older driver, so you give up the Game Ready optimisations and the display fixes in the releases since. Now that 617.14 carries the fix, updating is the better move and this is a fallback. If Roll Back Driver is greyed out, Windows has no previous driver stored and you need the manual install below.
- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, right-click your NVIDIA GPU and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver.
- Pick a reason when prompted, confirm, and restart if Windows asks.
- Launch the game. If it starts, this confirms the driver was the cause — but treat it as temporary and move to 617.14 when you can, since that is where NVIDIA fixed it.
Install a pre-616.56 driver by hand, if rollback is unavailable too
Check before applyingabout 20 minA last resort for machines that cannot take 617.14 and have no stored previous driver: download an earlier release yourself and point Device Manager at it.
Applies to: Windows 11, Windows 10
Before you do this
Windows will not install an older driver over a newer one through the automatic search path, and a manual display-driver swap blanks the screen briefly. Do it from the desktop. Since 617.14 now fixes this bug outright, prefer updating over this.
- Download a GeForce release published before 616.56 from NVIDIA's own driver downloads. Microsoft's guidance is explicit that you should not take drivers from any site other than the manufacturer's official one.
- Right-click Start, choose Device Manager, and expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your NVIDIA GPU, choose Update driver, then "Browse my computer for drivers".
- Point Windows at the folder you extracted the older driver into and continue.
- Restart, then launch the game.

Known issues
NVIDIA listed "Judgement/Lost Judgement/ Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. may fail to launch after updating to driver 616.56 [6681537]" under Open Issues from 616.92 onward, and moved it to Fixed Gaming Bugs in the 617.14 release notes of 22 September 2026. Updating to 617.14 or later is the vendor's own resolution.
Affects 616.56, 616.64, 616.92 · Status: fixed
For the month this bug was open, updating forward did not help: 616.64 listed N/A under both Fixed Gaming Bugs and Fixed General Bugs, and 616.92 listed N/A under Fixed Gaming Bugs — its three fixes were all display-related. 617.14 is the first release since 616.56 to fix a game launch problem, which is why the advice on this page changed.
Affects 616.64, 616.92 · Status: fixed
A second game regression from the same driver is still open: "Assassin's Creed Shadows may crash to desktop after extended gameplay after updating to driver 616.56 [6685219]". It is the only entry under Open Issues in the 617.14 release notes, so updating does not resolve that one. If crashing in play rather than failing to launch is your symptom, the diagnosis differs.

If none of this worked
If you are on 617.14 or later and the game still will not start, this page is no longer your answer — NVIDIA's fix is in that driver, so look at the game rather than the GPU. If the game has never launched on this PC, the driver was never the problem: a fresh install that will not start is usually a missing runtime, an antivirus quarantine of the game executable, or a launcher problem, and our Steam launch articles cover those paths. If the game launches and then shows a black screen while you can still hear audio, that is a different failure with its own fix. If it launches but crashes later in play, check the Assassin's Creed Shadows page instead: that regression is still open in 617.14 and behaves differently. And if you are on a driver older than 616.56 and the game still will not start, nothing on this page applies.
Common questions
- Will updating to the newest driver fix this?
- Yes, as of 617.14 — and that is a change. NVIDIA lists bug 6681537 under Fixed Gaming Bugs in the 617.14 release notes of 22 September 2026. While the bug was open this answer was no: 616.64 fixed nothing at all and 616.92 listed N/A under Fixed Gaming Bugs, so updating forward from 616.56 left the failure in place. If you read that advice here earlier, it was correct then and is superseded now.
- I already rolled back to an older driver. What should I do now?
- Move forward to 617.14 when it suits you. The rollback was a workaround for an open bug, and staying on a pre-616.56 driver means missing the display fixes and Game Ready optimisations that shipped since. Nothing breaks if you stay put, but there is no longer a reason to.
- Should I verify the game files or reinstall first?
- Not for this. NVIDIA documented the failure as a driver regression tied to updating to 616.56 and then fixed it in the driver, so reinstalling a game whose files are fine costs you a long download and changes nothing. Confirm your driver version first.

- NVIDIA lists "Judgement/Lost Judgement/ Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. may fail to launch after updating to driver 616.56 [6681537]" under Open Issues in Version 616.92 WHQL, so it is acknowledged and still unfixed in NVIDIA's newest driver.
- The Fixed General Bugs list for 616.92 contains only browser flicker [6673430], virtual displays that could not be created [6674464] and Remote Desktop black screens [6687328]; Fixed Gaming Bugs is N/A, so no game launch fix shipped in this driver.
- NVIDIA also lists "Assassin's Creed Shadows may crash to desktop after extended gameplay after updating to driver 616.56 [6685219]" as a separate open issue in 616.92.
