USB controller, headset or mouse keeps disconnecting on Windows 11
Start with power and ports, not with settings. Move the device to a port directly on the PC rather than a hub or a front-panel header, disconnect USB devices you are not using, and make sure the PC itself is on mains power. Only then look at power management, and target the one device rather than disabling USB selective suspend system-wide — Microsoft strongly recommends against that.

Almost every guide for this opens by telling you to disable USB selective suspend. Microsoft's own documentation says the opposite: the feature is on by default and Microsoft strongly recommends not disabling it, partly because a device that never suspends can stop the processor reaching its deeper sleep states. That does not make the advice useless — it makes it a last, narrow step rather than a first, global one.

- The Windows disconnect and reconnect chime plays at random with nothing touched
- A controller drops mid-game and comes back a second later
- A USB headset cuts out briefly and audio switches to another device
- Every USB device on the machine drops at the same moment
- The mouse freezes for a second, repeatedly

Why this happens
The port cannot supply enough power for what is plugged into it
Bus-powered devices share a budget, and a hub or a front-panel header stretches it further. Microsoft's own guidance for the "USB device might need more power" message is to give the device external power, put the PC on mains power, and unplug devices you are not using. All three point at the same underlying cause, and this is the most common one when several devices drop together.

The device is going through a hub or the wrong port for its features
Microsoft repeatedly says to connect directly to the PC rather than through external hubs, and to use the port that actually carries the feature the device needs — not every USB-C port on a machine carries the same Alternate Modes, USB4 or Thunderbolt support. A device on a port that only partly supports it can work and then fail intermittently rather than never working at all.

The cable is not up to the job
Microsoft's fix for limited USB4 function starts with using certified cables. Cheap or long USB-C cables commonly carry power and USB 2.0 data but not the higher-speed modes, and a marginal cable produces exactly this symptom: mostly fine, dropping under load or when moved.

Power management is suspending a device that does not resume cleanly
Selective suspend lets Windows put an idle port to sleep. Most devices resume without you noticing; a few do not, and reappear as a fresh connection. This is the cause that the popular advice is aimed at — but the popular fix disables the feature for the whole machine, which Microsoft advises against and which costs you deeper CPU sleep states. Targeting the single misbehaving device is the proportionate version.

- On a desktop, use a port on the rear I/O panel rather than a front-panel one. Front panel ports run through an internal header and an extra cable.
- Try a port on a different controller — on most desktops the USB 2.0 ports and the USB 3 ports are separate controllers, so moving between them tests more than moving between adjacent ports.
- If the drops stop, the original port, hub or its cable was the problem, and you are done.

- Disconnect USB devices you are not currently using, particularly anything that draws power — external drives, powered headsets, lighting, phone charging.
- If the device has its own power input, use it rather than running it off the bus.
- On a laptop, plug the PC into mains power. Battery operation tightens the power budget and changes how aggressively ports are suspended.
- If you need the hub, use a powered one with its own supply rather than a bus-powered one.
- Retest with the same device in the same port.

Check the cable and that the port supports what the device needs

- Swap in a different cable, ideally a certified one and a short one. Microsoft's first step for limited USB4 function is to use certified cables.
- Check your PC's specifications for which ports carry USB4, Thunderbolt or the DisplayPort Alternate Mode. A dock or display device plugged into a port that lacks the mode will behave erratically.
- If Windows says the device is not recognized, open Device Manager, find the device's error code in its properties, and work from that code rather than guessing.
- For USB-C audio specifically: analog adapters are not supported. If a headset adapter is dropping out, check that it is a digital adapter with the conversion hardware built in.

Before you do this
Do this per device, not system-wide. Microsoft states that selective suspend is on by default and strongly recommends not disabling it: a device that never suspends can prevent the USB host controller from disabling its transfer schedule, which stops the processor entering deeper sleep states such as C3. On a laptop that shows up as worse battery life; on a desktop it can mean higher idle power and, in some builds, coil whine or fan behaviour that was not there before.
- Open Device Manager and expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Find the entry for the device that drops. If it is a composite device, the entry may be under Human Interface Devices or Sound, video and game controllers instead.
- Open its Properties and look for a Power Management tab. Clear "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power", then OK. The same check box exists on USB Root Hub properties.
- Restart and use the PC normally for a day before deciding it worked — this symptom is intermittent by nature.
- Leave the global USB selective suspend setting alone. It lives under Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > USB settings, and it is not the right lever here.
- If it did not help, tick the box again. There is no benefit to leaving power management off for a device that was not the culprit.
Known issues
Microsoft's own developer documentation strongly recommends against disabling USB selective suspend, which is the fix most consumer guides lead with. Disabling it prevents the USB host controller from disabling its transfer schedule, which in turn prevents the processor from entering deeper sleep states such as C3.

If none of this worked
If the drops line up with something else happening — a game launching, a monitor waking, a Wi-Fi burst — the cause is probably not USB at all. Watch Event Viewer under Windows Logs > System around the timestamp of a drop and see what else is logged. A wireless controller or headset that uses its own dongle is a radio problem rather than a USB power one: move the dongle away from a USB 3 port, which is a well-known source of 2.4 GHz interference, and try a short extension cable to get it clear of the case. If every USB device on the machine drops simultaneously and repeatedly, suspect the power supply or the motherboard rather than any setting, especially if it started without a software change. And if this began right after a Windows feature update, check whether the chipset and USB controller drivers from your motherboard maker are newer than the ones Windows installed.

- Should I just disable USB selective suspend?
- Microsoft strongly recommends not disabling it, and gives a concrete reason: a device that is never suspended can stop the USB host controller disabling its transfer schedule, which prevents the processor from entering deeper sleep states. If power management really is your problem, turn it off for the one device in Device Manager instead of switching the feature off for the whole machine.
- Why do all my USB devices drop at the same time?
- Simultaneous drops point at something shared — the controller, the hub they are all on, or the power feeding it. Work through power first: unplug what you are not using, put the PC on mains power, and move devices off any hub. If it persists with a minimal set of devices plugged directly into the rear ports, the problem is the hardware rather than a Windows setting.
- Is a front-panel USB port worse than a rear one?
- Often, yes, on a desktop. A front-panel port runs through an internal header and an extra length of cable before it reaches the motherboard, which adds both a connector that can be loose and a longer path. It is the cheapest variable to eliminate, so eliminate it early.
- My wireless controller keeps dropping, but it is not plugged in by USB. Does this apply?
- Partly. If it uses a USB dongle, the dongle's port matters and everything above applies to it — including the interference problem, since USB 3 ports and devices are a well-known source of 2.4 GHz noise. If the controller connects over Bluetooth, this is a Bluetooth problem instead and a different set of steps applies.
- Windows says "USB device not recognized". Is that the same thing?
- It is the same family of symptom, but it gives you more to work with. Microsoft's advice for that message is to open Device Manager, find the specific error code on the device, and follow the steps for that code. A code narrows the cause far faster than any generic checklist, so do that before working through this page.
