HDR looks washed out or grey in games on Windows 11
Nine times out of ten the desktop and SDR apps look washed out, not the game, and the fix is the SDR content brightness slider under the HDR settings — Windows sets it low by default. If the game itself looks flat, check with dxdiag that HDR is genuinely engaged, then run the Windows HDR Calibration app so Windows knows your display's actual black and peak brightness.
"Washed out" covers two different complaints that need different fixes. If everything outside the game looks grey and lifeless, that is the SDR-to-HDR brightness mapping and it is a settings problem. If the game itself is flat with milky blacks, that is usually Windows tone-mapping to brightness values your display never reported, or the display quietly running in an SDR mode while Windows thinks it is in HDR.

- Screenshots come out looking wrong even though the screen looks fine

Why this happens
The SDR content brightness slider is at its default
With HDR on, Windows renders SDR content — the desktop, browsers, most applications — into the HDR signal, and a slider decides how bright that content sits relative to HDR content. On an external HDR display that slider is the only thing controlling SDR brightness, and its default is usually too low, which reads as dull and grey. On a built-in display, SDR brightness is handled by the normal brightness control or automatically instead, so the slider may not be the culprit there.
Windows does not know your display's real brightness range
HDR tone mapping needs to know how dark your panel's blacks go and how bright its highlights get. If the display reports nothing useful over EDID, or reports optimistic marketing numbers, Windows maps the image to the wrong range and the result is lifted blacks and flat highlights. The Windows HDR Calibration app exists for this: its three patterns, which follow HDR Gaming Interest Group guidance, establish the darkest visible detail, the brightest visible detail and peak brightness, and write a colour profile from them.
HDR is switched on in Windows but the display is not in HDR mode
Many monitors need HDR enabled in their own on-screen menu, and some only accept an HDR signal on particular inputs or at particular refresh rates. Windows will happily report HDR as on while the panel shows an SDR-mapped image. dxdiag settles it: AdvancedColorEnabled tells you what Windows thinks, and the monitor capability block tells you whether the panel actually advertises HDR10 with the BT.2020 colour spaces and Eotf2084 support.

Night Light or a colour-management layer is fighting the HDR pipeline
Microsoft names Night Light specifically as a cause of over-saturated colour while HDR is on. Any other layer that shifts colour — a vendor colour profile, a monitor picture mode with its own processing, or a display's default post-processing — can do the same, and Microsoft warns that display post-processing can make even the calibration app underperform.

Auto HDR is expanding an SDR game and you are seeing its guesswork
Auto HDR takes DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games that were made for SDR and stretches their colour range and brightness into HDR. It is an approximation, and on some titles the result is flatter or more washed out than the game's native SDR output. It is worth turning off just to compare — but note that enabling Auto HDR also silently turns on Optimizations for windowed games, and Windows will not let you turn that back off until Auto HDR is off first.

Confirm HDR is actually engaged before changing anything

- Press Windows+R, run dxdiag, and let it finish loading. Open the Display tab for the monitor in question.
dxdiag - Look for AdvancedColorSupported and AdvancedColorEnabled. Supported without Enabled means Windows is not sending HDR. Neither means the display is not being seen as HDR-capable at all.
- In the same panel, check the monitor capabilities for HDR10, the BT2020RGB or BT2020YCC colour spaces, and Eotf2084Supported. If those are missing, the display is not advertising HDR over this connection.
- Open the monitor's own on-screen menu and check whether HDR is enabled there too. Several monitors need it turned on per input, and some only accept HDR on one port or below a certain refresh rate.

Raise the SDR content brightness
about 3 minThis is the single most common cause of "everything went grey when I turned on HDR", and it takes ten seconds to test.

- Open Settings > System > Display and select the HDR display.
- Expand the HDR section and find SDR content brightness.
- Drag it up until the desktop looks the way it did with HDR off. This changes SDR brightness relative to HDR content; it does not dim your HDR highlights.
- If you are on a laptop's built-in HDR panel and the slider does nothing, that is expected — built-in displays control SDR brightness through the normal brightness setting or automatically instead.
- Restart any desktop app that still looks wrong. Microsoft notes some apps only pick up the new brightness on relaunch.

Run the Windows HDR Calibration app
about 15 minIt tells Windows what your panel can actually do, which is what the tone mapping needs in order to stop lifting blacks and crushing highlights.

- Check you qualify: Windows 11, HDR turned on, WDDM 2.7 or newer drivers, and a GPU no older than AMD RX 400, Intel 11th Gen integrated or DG1, or NVIDIA GTX 10 series.
- Install Windows HDR Calibration from the Microsoft Store and run it full-screen on the display you are calibrating.
- Work through the three patterns. For each, move the slider until the test pattern just disappears — that is the point where the display can no longer show that detail.
- Leave the colour saturation slider near its default. Microsoft's warning here is worth taking seriously: pushed too far, HDR content looks unnatural and over-saturated rather than better.
- Calibrate under the lighting you normally play in, and re-run it if you change monitor, cable or GPU.
- If the result is worse, delete the profile from Control Panel > Color Management and try again.

Compare the game with Auto HDR off
about 5 minAuto HDR is an expansion of an SDR image, not real HDR mastering. On some games its result genuinely looks flatter than the original.

- Check whether the game has native HDR in its own graphics options. If it does, use that and leave Auto HDR off — Auto HDR is aimed at DirectX 11 and 12 games that only ever shipped SDR output.
- Open Settings > System > Display, select the display, expand HDR, and turn Auto HDR off.
- Restart the game and compare the same scene.
- Be aware of the side effect: turning Auto HDR on also turns on Optimizations for windowed games, and Windows will not let you turn that off until Auto HDR is off. If you were relying on that optimization for variable refresh rate in a borderless window, re-enable it afterwards under Settings > System > Display > Graphics.

Update the graphics driver and try DisplayPort instead of HDMI
about 20 minMicrosoft's own colour troubleshooting points at both of these, and a marginal HDMI link is a common reason a display drops HDR or falls back to a lower colour format.

- Install the current driver from your GPU vendor rather than the one Windows Update supplies, and reboot.
- If the display is connected over HDMI and has a DisplayPort input, move to DisplayPort with a certified cable.
- Re-run the dxdiag check. If HDR10 and Eotf2084 now appear where they did not before, the link was the problem.

Turn off the display's own picture processing

Before you do this
This changes settings saved in the monitor itself, not in Windows. Note the current picture mode and any values you overwrite before you change them, because a factory reset also clears any other adjustments you have made.
- In the monitor's on-screen menu, switch to a neutral HDR picture mode. Modes named Vivid, Dynamic, Game or Cinema usually apply extra saturation or contrast processing.
- Turn off dynamic contrast, local dimming presets described as "smart", black equalizer, colour enhancement and any sharpening.
- If the menu is unclear, factory-reset the monitor and re-enable only HDR, then re-run the calibration app.

Known issues
Microsoft acknowledges that some wide colour gamut HDR displays do not reproduce sRGB colour correctly, which makes SDR content look over-saturated regardless of Windows settings. There is no Windows-side fix for that; it is a property of the panel.

If none of this worked
If the washed-out look also happens with HDR completely off, this is not an HDR problem — look at the GPU control panel's output colour range (Limited versus Full RGB), the monitor's own picture mode, and any colour profile applied under Settings > System > Display > Advanced display > Display adapter properties > Color Management. If only screenshots look wrong while the screen looks right, that is expected behaviour: a screenshot captures the HDR buffer and most viewers display it as SDR without tone mapping. And if the display never reports HDR10 in dxdiag on any cable or port, it is very likely an SDR panel being advertised as "HDR ready", which no amount of Windows configuration will change.
Common questions
- Why does turning on HDR make my desktop look worse?
- Because with HDR on, everything that is not HDR — the desktop, your browser, most apps — gets mapped into the HDR signal at a brightness set by the SDR content brightness slider, and its default is usually too dim. Raise that slider until the desktop matches how it looked before. On a laptop's built-in HDR panel the slider may do nothing, because SDR brightness there is handled by the ordinary brightness control.
- Is Auto HDR worth using?
- It depends on the game. Auto HDR expands a game that was authored in SDR, so it is inferring highlight detail that was never captured. On some titles that looks noticeably better; on others it looks flat. If a game has its own native HDR mode, use that instead. The only way to know for your game is to look at the same scene both ways.
- Do I need the HDR Calibration app if my monitor is HDR certified?
- Usually yes. Certification says the panel meets a brightness and colour standard; it does not mean the numbers Windows receives over EDID match what your specific unit does. The calibration app measures your panel with your eyes in your room, which is a different and more useful thing. Re-run it whenever you change display, cable or GPU.
- Windows says HDR is on but the monitor says it is off. Who is right?
- The monitor. Windows only reports what it is trying to send. Check AdvancedColorEnabled in dxdiag, then enable HDR in the monitor's own menu — many models require it per input, and some will not accept HDR at the highest refresh rate the port supports. If enabling HDR on the monitor forces the refresh rate down, that is a bandwidth limit on the cable or port, not a Windows setting.
- Should I use the GPU vendor's HDR setting or Windows'?
- Windows'. The HDR toggle in Settings is what actually switches the display pipeline; the vendor control panels mostly surface the same state. Where the vendor panel does matter is output colour depth and range — an output stuck at Limited range or 8-bit will undo everything else you fix here.
